Jet-Setting

Being Canadian, I am always slightly confused about what I should pack for Winter vacation. Usually at this time of year I am bundled up in my winter coat, heavy duty snow boots, thermal headscarf and gloves. This year it is a little bit more mild up here in the great North, but it is still much colder than it is in Costa Rica, where I am headed in a week and a half. I know that a lot of people migrate to Florida, Cuba, Jamaica and other such places at this time of in order to escape the blistering cold. I have put together an inspiration board to remind all of us what summer dressing entails and what beach-going looks like.
For those of you who are jet-setting, have an incredible time on the beach. Remember, everyone looks better with a tan ;)
What's your jet-setting destination? What beach items can you not live without?

Holiday Haute-Ness

'Tis the season to take risks, make bold fashion statements and look sexy. Holiday parties and New Years celebrations are great excuses to dress to impress and maybe even step out of your comfort zone. I have my first Holiday party this Friday night and I'm going to wear a fitted black sequin blazer ... (pictures will come). For those of you who are unsure what to adorn themselves in over the next few weeks, I have put together a collage that may offer some wardrobe inspiration. Try over-accessorizing, bright metallic hues, and unusual textures/materials (feathers, fur, sequins, sheer, velvet). This Holiday season don't be a hot mess, confidently strut that haute-ness.

Let me know what you end up wearing!

Double Take

I was ready to launch GAWK weeks before I made it live on the net, but I held off because I was in search of the PERFECT name. After weeks of brainstorm sessions, discussions with friends and family, and gathering inspiration from random sources, I decided on GAWK. To me this is a simple but powerful word that arouses curiosity and can describe the act of staring at something in amazement (which is what my blog is about). To my shock, number 6 on technoroti's top 100 list is a site called GAWKER !!!! I had to do a double take to make sure that I was reading that correctly. And I was. The good news is, GAWK is still authentic. Gawker is close, but no cigar.

Just thought that I would share.

Work Hard, Play Hard(er)

In a previous post (see it here) I talked about dressing for the job you want. Or rather, for the type of environment that you will be working in. In that post I looked much more casual, and felt much more myself. However, I recently had to purchase a suit because I had a corporate event (that I had helped plan) to attend and I needed to 'play' the part. I have to say, I don't quite mind this look. It makes me feel bold, strong and powerful. The 'power' suit allows you to exude a different level of confidence and professionalism. Just like with everything else in our lives, I think that it is about balance and moderation. I won't wear a suit everyday (my job does not require that I do), but I think that when I do wear it, I will rock it hard!
What is your dress code at work?

Head Case

One of my favourite accessory purchases from last year was this head scarf - actually, it is just a circle scarf (a seamless, tubular design). However, after experimenting with the various ways that it could be warn, I realized that I loved using it as a scarf and an ear warming headband at the same time. It's a genius design if you ask me and it looks effortlessly cool while keeping you warm. Some winter hats can be bulking and unattractive, but I think this Preloved number solves the winter hat blues.

Do you rock earmuffs, a head band or a winter hat?

Full Train Ahead

I have been completely neglecting GAWK over the past three weeks. I have so desperately wanted to play dress up, take photos and write to express my thoughts and feelings on the latest fashions, but unfortunately (for GAWK) other areas of my life had my time completely monopolized. Since I last posted, I secured an incredible job at KCI Management, a boutique corporate event management agency. As of December 12th, I will officially be the newest Event Coordinator at the firm. I am very excited about this opportunity! Also during my absence from blogging, I was busy prepping for a Holiday photo shoot for Hardly Magazine, an online 'zine where I serve as the Fashion Editor. The issue will be live in mid-December (check it out!)

The other day, I decided to take a stroll along the train tracks and have some quality ME time. I wanted to enjoy the warm November air while I cherished a moment of tranquility. I have been so busy that I haven't really had a chance to think about the new year and all of the things that will be accompanying it. In two weeks I will be done the in-class, theoretical portion of my post-graduate degree, and I will be focused on the practical experience that my new job will offer. I also have a lot of ideas of how I can expand this blog and my fashion business. These are some of the things that excite me, keep me motivated and focused on the future. I look forward to getting back into the real world (and out of the classroom), the Holiday season, and the fresh beginning that the New Year always brings. I think its fair to say that for the next little while, I will be full train ahead...soaring through the clutter and immersing myself in the things that excite me and make me happy.

As the year/semester wraps up, what projects are you knee-deep in? What keeps you focused and motivated? As always, I love your feedback!
